How many hours does HSK 3 reading take?
We log reading and listening time as it happens, so this is a measurement rather than an estimate. It also means we will not publish a number until enough learners have logged enough hours for the median to mean something.

How this is worked out
Input time is engaged time, not wall-clock time. The reader sends a heartbeat only while the article is actually on screen and the tab is in front; the audio player counts only while sound is playing. A session is capped at one hour so a tab left open overnight cannot inflate anything.
The reading level is the band the reader actually serves a learner, not a self-reported answer: it selects which rewrite of each article they get, so it is a load-bearing value they have to live with.
The figure is a median, not a mean, and it is recomputed on every page load. Hours are summed across both live sessions and the archived totals we roll old sessions into, so the number never shrinks when data ages.
What this number is not
- It is not a promise. It describes the learners we have, who chose a graded-reading app and may already have studied elsewhere.
- It only counts hours logged here. Time spent in a classroom, in a textbook or in another app is real and invisible to us, so the true total for any learner is higher.
- It is reading, not speaking or writing. Reaching a reading band says nothing about being able to hold a conversation at it.
